Vital signs are key indicators of essential bodily functions, significantly contributing to the evaluation of an individual’s overall health status. Consistent monitoring of vital signs equips healthcare practitioners with crucial data, enabling them to make well-informed judgments about a patient’s health condition.

The four main vital signs are body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure.

Body temperature

Body temperature indicates the degree of heat in the body and is typically measured using a thermometer. A normal body temperature ranges between 36.1°C to 37.2°C. Deviations from this range could indicate an infection or an underlying health condition.

Heart Rate

Heart rate, also known as pulse rate, measures the number of times the heart beats per minute. This is often checked by placing fingers on the pulse points. The normal resting heart rate for adults falls within a range of 60 to 100 beats per minute. A higher or lower heart rate may indicate cardiovascular abnormalities or other health issues.

Respiratory rate

Respiratory rate, on the other hand, measures the number of breaths taken per minute. This is assessed by observing the rise and fall of the chest or feeling the breath against the hand. The normal respiratory rate for adults usually ranges between 12 and 20 breaths per minute. Any significant deviation in respiratory rate may suggest respiratory problems or lung diseases.

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a measure of the force of blood against the walls of the arteries. It is typically recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure over diastolic pressure. A normal blood pressure reading is around 120/80 mmHg. Higher or lower blood pressure levels could indicate hypertension or hypotension, respectively, both of which can have serious health implications.
